PROCESS

Work is protected… Let me tell you a little about my process

  • Research. I was able to interview a few Slate users to understand the current pain points with aspects including usability, navigation, and visual design. A few meetings with key stakeholders also allowed me to understand client expectations for the redesign and motivated me to work closely with them.

  • Design. Using my research insights, I conducted the redesign and ensured that I was not only designing with healthcare industry regulations in mind, but also the critical users. Slate is used by doctors, nurses, firefighters, and other community workers. I prioritized usability and interaction design to optimize accessibility and ease of use, and I kept up to date with design trends to ensure a modern visual look.

  • Iterate. Regular check-ins with my manager and development team informed me on where I could improve. I always took a moment to get more clarity in their feedback and incorporate design changes appropriately and accordingly.

  • Test. My internship ended before I could get around to user testing, but I was able to have a few sessions with the design team. I asked anyone available (developers, researchers, etc) if they could provide heuristic feedback on the redesign regarding the improvements and leave any comments for improvement.

REFLECTION

Adapt to anything, learn from anyone

  • Roll with the punches. Two days into my internship, my design mentor left due to an emergency. I was not expecting this at all, but I knew I could still get valuable learnings from this.

  • Learn from anyone. Without a design mentor, I knew I had to make everyone in the company my mentor. Everyone from researchers to PMs to developers were people I took the time to talk to and learn more about the industry from.

  • Get as much feedback as possible. Without a designer to learn from, it was hard to tell if my designs were on track with the company's values. I prioritized having a quick turnaround to get more feedback and direction.
